The History of Pilates

Pilates was developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates, a German physical trainer who believed in the connection between the mind and body. Originally called “Contrology,” his method focused on controlled movements, breath, and core strength. During World War I, Joseph used his techniques to help rehabilitate injured soldiers by attaching springs to hospital beds, laying the foundation for equipment like the Reformer and Cadillac. After moving to New York in the 1920s, his practice quickly gained recognition among dancers, athletes, and performers for improving strength, flexibility, and posture. Today, Pilates is practiced worldwide, valued for its ability to build long-lasting strength, restore balance, and promote overall well-being.
